The 2015 Canada Winter Games is fast approaching. In 2015, venues in and around Toronto, Ontario will host the largest ever multi-sport event in Canada when the 2015 Pan American Games take place from July 10 to 26. The Canada Games is a high level multi-sport competition held every two years on an alternating basis between winter and summer.Prince George, B.C. is hosting the 2015 Canada Winter Games, bringing together approximately 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers from the 13 provinces and territories to compete in 20 sports. These Games are considered a stepping stone to international competitions and multi-sport Games such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Pan Am and Commonwealth Games. As well, this event generates economic activity for host communities (the 2007 Canada Winter Games generated over $100 million in economic activity) and provides important legacies such as new and refurbished facilities and equipment as well as sport and community development opportunities.
Kamloops is the proud host of the 2015 Special Olympics BC Winter Games from February 19 - February 21st, 2015 here in Kamloops! Kamloops last played host to this outstanding and inspirational event in 2003. Kamloops has a long history with the Special Olympics as it was one of the first communities to start offering Speical Olympics programs in 1983. The 2015 SOBC Winter Games will bring over 600 athletes with intellectual disabilities and 200 volunteer coaches to Kamloops to compete in seven winter sports (alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speed skating) to compete for a chance to advance to the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and from there the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Game to be held in Austria!
Ballantyne, a double gold medallist in swimming at the 1977 Canada Summer Games, heads to Prince George after serving a year as the Chief Operating Officer for the Vancouver Giants Hockey Club. Prior to his stint with the Giants, he served as Project Director for the Molson Canadian Hockey House during the 2010 Winter Olympics, CEO for the 2009 World Police and Fire Games, General Manager for the 2007 Memorial Cup, General Manager for the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship, and General Manager for the Molson Indy in Vancouver from 1996-2003.
